17 killed in violence in Sri Lanka

In the past 24 hours, violent clashes in northern and eastern Sri Lanka have resulted in the deaths of at least 17 people. Eight members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were shot dead by security forces in the Jaffna peninsula when they attempted to break into military defence lines .
