The 50th anniversary celebrations of Althea Gibson's first US National Championship title for a black tennis player were marked by Venus and Serena Williams with victories in the first round of the US Open. While Venus convincingly beat Kira Nagy of Hungary 6-2, 6-1, Serena Williams had slightly more trouble getting past Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 7-5.
