Rain lashes Andhra Pradesh; 18 killed

At least 18 people were killed in flash floods and heavy rain that lashed four south coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh during the last five days, official sources said on Tuesday. Hundreds of tanks either collapsed or suffered extensive damage while road and rail networks were damaged as widespread rain disrupted normal life in Nellore, Prakasam, Kadapah and Chittoor, they said.

RBI hikes cash reserve ratio by 0.5 per cent

Belying expectations of any relief on interest rate front, Reserve Bank on Tuesday hiked the statutory deposits - CRR - by 0.5 per cent to 7.5 per cent despite inflation falling to a five-year low. Cash Reserve Ratio is the ratio of interest-free cash reserves mandatorily kept by the banks with the RBI, which had it been unchanged could have provided banks an option to ease the lending rates.

Rate of inflation high vis-a-vis other countries : RBI

The Reserve Bank of India in its annual report said that the rate of inflation in India remained higher compared to other emerging markets as also the advanced economies in 2006-07. Although the inflation remained within the RBI's projection of 5.0-5.5 per cent up to November 11, 2006, between January 6 and March 24, 2007 it was above six per cent.

Mob violence follows TV sting operation : Delhi

Following the broadcast of a sting operation by a Hindi television news channel which showed a woman teacher with the Asaf Ali Road branch of the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya allegedly pushing students into prostitution, an angry mob went on a rampage. Two dozen vehicles were damaged and a police gypsy was burnt during the mob violence.
