The latest figures depict the falling of writing standards among seven year olds in UK. 80% children reach Level 2 in school writing tests. Maths, science or reading this year have not undergone a major change, with some 90% achieving the required level in maths, 89% in science and 84% in reading.

Coffee 'could prevent eye tremor'

Italian researchers looked at the coffee drinking and smoking habits of 166 people with blepharospasm. Sufferers have uncontrollable twitching of the eyelid which, in extreme cases, stops them being able to see. One or two cups of coffee a day seemed to reduce the risk of the condition, the team reported in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

Widow urges new euthanasia laws

Michelle Bennett's husband Paul, whose Motor Neurone Disease left him paralysed and in constant pain, decided to die in a Swiss clinic.In May 2006 Mr Bennett, of Morriston, Swansea, travelled to the Dignitas clinic in Zurich with his family. However, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and British Medical Association (BMA) remain opposed to euthanasia.

A new generation of drugs could revolutionise treatment for people with rheumatoid arthritis, experts believe. Austrian researchers said trials show MabThera, Tocilizumab and Orencia slowed progression of the disease and reduced symptoms, the Lancet reported.

Cod liver oil 'treats depression'

Scientists in Norway suggest that taking a spoonful of cod liver oil each day could stave off depression. In a study of almost 22,000 people aged over 40, those who regularly took the oil were less likely to suffer depression than those who did not.
