Secularism and pseudo-secularism is never ending but let's for a moment pause
Tuesday, October 07, 2008

In India the debate between secularism and pseudo-secularism is never ending but let's for a moment pause and have a look at where we stand today. The word "secular" was inserted into the Preamble of our Constitution by the 42nd Amendment in 1976, during the Emergency in India. It implies equality of all religions and religious tolerance. In other words, India does not have an official state rel

Wednesday, October 01, 2008
www.ibnlive.com ( Blogs  )
It is October in India. October of the silken sun and blossoming trees. October is a holy time. Durga comes sweeping down from the mountains. Iftaar dinners are in full swing. The lamps of Navratri are about to be lit. October is the time of renewal. And this October it is more necessary than ever to ask questions that will renew us all. There have been 16 major bomb blasts since 2002, and approx

Indian IT lives on, Mphasis added
Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Was it not Mark Twain who said, "Rumours of my death are greatly exaggerated?". I am thinking of Indian IT this week as the shares of Infosys, Wipro and Tata Consultancy languish with the rest of the lot as the global fever of the sub-prime meltdown grips markets. The country's software service industry has been dumped twice after torrid affairs in recent memory. It kind of reminds me about how

Naipaul discovered something about West Indian Cricket
Monday, September 29, 2008
www.hindustantimes.com ( Blogs  )
Keeping with my newly found passion for reading, I discovered something about West Indian Cricket. It bears a stamp of foresight from the author, VS Naipaul. That one paragraph in the second chapter of the book titled, "The Middle Passage", Naipaul mentions about how critical cricket proved to be for Trinidad - an island that was unique in its demeanor and attitude towards life. And then comes a l

Is self-interest more important than democracy?
Monday, September 29, 2008
www.hindustantimes.com ( Blogs  )
Is self-interest more important than democracy? Or do principles matter in foreign policy? As India readies to receive Myanmar's Vice Senior General Maung Aye, the number two man in the military junta, such questions become wholly legitimate. Maung Aye, who has visited India previously as Army Chief, is said to be "pro-India" in his approach. He's been invited by Vice-President Hamid Ansari and

A leading English daily has published what reads like an obituary for Varsha, who, if you are uninformed, is Asha Bhosle's daughter, hospitalised for a 'pill' overdose yesterday. We spoke to Jaslok hospital this morning and she's doing fine. The unmentioned paper must have thought they'd score brownie points with readers by giving them the 'full story'. it's more like fool story.

Rahul Mahajan can't even fake it!
Friday, September 26, 2008
jayita.mid-day.com ( Blogs  )
A teary-eyed Rahul Mahajan, with a coffee mug in hand, makes a very emotional appeal on national TV about how as “crores of people prayed, he lost his father.” As the lights in Bigg Boss’ house dim, (which they don’t otherwise) Rahul tries to follow his dialogue writer’s instructions as he takes a pregnant pause before sighing heavily and saying, “My father was lying in his bed and then his life s

Sleepless in Araria
Thursday, September 25, 2008
www.ibnlive.com ( Blogs  )
I left at 7 am and it took me 12 hours to reach the district block office of Araria. Araria borders Nepal and hence is one of the worst affected districts by the current Kosi Floods. The Government has only one coordination office to coordinate for the relief effort meeting the needs of the two districts Araria and Saupal. Approximately 8,000 people from Araria and Saupal are living in 15 relief
