Marion Jones returns Olympic medals

Former Olypmic sprinter Marion Jones has relinquished the five Olympic medals she won at the 2000 Sydney Games, thus turning over the three gold and two bronze medals over to the US Olympic Committee (USOC). Jones also accepted a two-year ban after admitting to the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Agni-1 test fired

Agni-1, which is the short range variant of India's indigenously developed Agni series of ballistic missiles, was test-fired from Wheelers Island off the Orissa coast. This was the fourth test-firing of the surface-to-surface ballistic missile, which is capable of striking a target up to a distance of 700 km.

Army Chief seeks records to be made public

The Army Chief General J J Singh has sought the de-classification of the war records of the 1962, 1965 and 1971 wars in order that soldiers and others can draw lessons from these conflicts. At the release of a coffee table book, he said, "War histories of 1962 Sino-Indian conflict, and 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars should be made public".

Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister, has given his approval for the funding of the Bogibeel Rail-cum Road Bridge and the Rangia–Murkongselek gauge conversion projects, which would cost Rs19.80bn. The Indian army will soon induct portable non-lethal laser dazzlers that can stun and blind their opponents. The weapon will mainly be used by soldiers engaged in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the north-east. According to army sources, the laser dazzlers will be inducted into the army possibly by 2008.
