A challenge against the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's re-election bid, in the Supreme Court was delayed as one of the judges pulled out. The withdrawal of Judge Sardar Raza Khan from the nine-member bench of the Supreme Court forced the Chief Justice to name a new panel of judges.

The second mobile court in the country, was inaugurated on Tuesday in the town of Hoshiarpur -one of the most backward areas of Punjab. The air-conditioned mobile bus, custom-made to function as a moving courtwas jointly inaugurated by Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Vijender Jain and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at Talwara.

The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up the Tamil Nadu government for failing to comply with its order on a bandh call given by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.The apex court warned the Tamil Nadu government of initiating contempt of court proceedings and said, if necessary, it will not hesitate to summon the chief secretary and the chief minister.

The Supreme Court has stayed the Delhi High Court order sentencing four employees of the tabloid Mid Day to jail for publishing news reports about former chief justice YK Sabharwal. The four employees include two journalists, a cartoonist and a publisher. They have been sentenced to four months on charges of contempt of court in the Justice Sabharwal case.

Dying declaration not the last word : Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has warned that it is unsafe to convict a person solely on the basis of a dying declaration, especially in cases where there is a suspicion of the veracity of the deceased's statement. A bench of Supreme Court judges observed, "the court may have to look for some corroborative evidence by treating dying declaration only as a piece of evidence".

'93 blasts case: Freed to pay for judgement copies

The 23 people acquitted in the 1993 blasts case by the TADA court will have to pay about Rs 24,000 for certified copies of the judgement -which consists of 6000 pages- whereas the convicts will get them free of cost. The TADA court is scheduled to hand over copies of its judgement to the 100 convicts beginning today.

Alistair Perreira's bail plea has been rejected by the Bombay High Court on Friday. Perreira was sentenced to three years in the hit and run case in which six labourers were mowed down during drunken driving last year. He was taken into judicial custody after surrendering following the Bombay High Court's sentencing and has been lodged in the Arthur Road jail.

Delhi HC defers Uphaar verdict

The final verdict of the Uphaar case -which was scheduled for today- has been postponed by the Delhi High Court to October 20. The reason for postponing the verdict is that the court needs time to review the entire case before giving its final verdict. 59 people were killed on June 13, 1997, in a fire at New Delhi's Uphaar theatre.
