A tsunami alert was issued on Wednesday to the Andaman and Nicobar islands, after a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale stuck Indonesia. Meanwhile the Central government asked the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration to monitor the situation.

Spiders weave a giant web : Texas

Entomologists studying spiders have claimed that a variety of spider species built on one another's work to create a sprawling web that has formed a blanket over hundreds of yards of trees and shrubs at a park in North Texas. The heavy rains earlier this summer resulted in creating prime feeding conditions for the spiders, thus encouraging their activity.

Norwegian ship Blue Lady, reportedly containing toxic material has been granted permission by the Supreme Court for dismantling the ship on the basis of report submitted by the technical experts committee appointed by it. The ship is anchored along the coast of Alang in Gujarat.

Indian scientists study climate change : Arctic

The government informed the Rajya Sabha that
Indian scientists have undertaken a maiden expedition to the Arctic region to study climate change, glaciology and marine biology. A team of five scientists have reached the international research facility at Ny Alesund at Spitsbergen Island in Svalbard archipelago of Norway.

The first anniversary of the death of environmentalist and television "crocodile hunter" Steve Irwin was marked by Australia in a low-key manner. Tributes were paid to his wife and daughter for the manner which they conduced themselves since Irwin's death by a stingray barb that pierced his chest during filming on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

According to a new climate model developed by scientists at NASA, severe storms and violent tornadoes may become more prevalent as the Earth's climate rises. The model predicts a warmer climate, stronger and more severe storms can be expected, but with fewer storms overall.

Campaign launched to save endangered birds

The UK-based BirdLife International plans to raise tens of millions of dollars to save 189 endangered birds over the next five years by protecting their habitat and raising public awareness about their plight. The conservation group is approaching environmental groups, corporations and individuals to contribute the USD 37.8 million for the 'the Species Champions initiative'.

'Climate change will trigger hunger in India' : UN agency

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned against the effects of climate change in India. According to the UN agency, climate change is likely to trigger a "risk of hunger" in India by affecting cereal production by as much as 18 per cent because of floods and droughts.

India rejected the charge that it is one of the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, instead it accused the developed countries of externalising the problem they had created and trying to pass on the cost of the solution to the developing nations.The Indian UN Ambassador, Nirupam Sen said India with 17 per cent of the population has only 4 per cent of global green house gases.
