The homeland security advisor to the US President George W Bush, Fran Townsend said that the Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is "virtually impotent" and can do little more than send videotaped messages. An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's densely-populated East Java resulting in panic and damaging numerous houses however no serious casualties were reported. The quake hit at 1:36 am local time and was centered about 100 kilometres underground, 43 kilometres southeast of the town of Situbondo.

The former Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharif has returned to Pakistan from exile to lead a campaign to topple the Pervez Musharraf-led military regime. Sharif was ousted in a military coup by Musharraf eight years ago.
