Kashmir militants prepared for Ramadan truce

Syed Sallahuddin, chairman of the United Jehad Council, an umbrella group of 12 militant organisations said that it was ready for a truce during Ramadan if a "sincere" offer comes from "responsible quarters in India." However, Sallahuddin added that so far, the militant leadership had not been approached, either directly or indirectly, with any ceasefire offer.

The South African allrounder Andrew Hall has announced that his resignation from international cricket after being overlooked for the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup. Hall, who played 21 Tests and 88 ODIs for South Africa, is currently in playing for English county team Kent and the county's coach Graham Ford also felt that the allrounder may have been miffed at his omission from the Twenty20 squad

English Premier League team Chelsea missed an excellent oppurtunity to reach the top of the league after losing to Aston Villa in their first defeat of the season. Sunday's 2-0 loss was Chelsea's first defeat in 19 matches. The former champions were missing the services of England midfielder Frank Lampard who suffered a thigh strain while training on Friday.

Serena Williams cruised to an easy victory over her opponent, 10th seeded Marion Bartoli of France to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open. Serena showed no adverse effects of her lingering thumb injury to beat Bartoli 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile her elder sister, Venus Williams kept the pressure on No 5 Ana Ivanovic and beat her 6-4, 6-2.

The Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting was one of three players missing from the Australian squad for the Twenty20 tournament in South Africa beginning Monday. The petrol station dealers across the state of Maharashtra are on a day-long strike. They are protesting harassment by an independent agency, SGS, which is authorised to check fuel quality. The dealers have also demanded access to fuel adulteration test kits, failing which they would resort to a shutdown on September 10 and 11.

A woman in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir was injured as her mobile phone 'exploded'. The woman who was talking on her phone received injuries on her face and hands, as the battery of the mobile phone exploded. The battery was of the same make that was declared unfit and was recalled by a leading mobile company.
