The former Pakistani Premier Benazir Bhutto said that she wished to see a treaty between India and Pakistan in the 60th year of their Independence that "promises" peace for the coming generations."In the 60th year of Pakistan's and India's independence, we would like to see India and Pakistan to come to a treaty that can promise peace to coming generations," she said at a press conference.

Following the Prime Minister’s Independence Day announcement of establishing eight new IITs, a formal request has been put before the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe by the Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Arjun Singh seeking not just financial aid but also “technical expertise” in building state-of-the-art infrastructure for these new institutions.

The Australian Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews said that the investigations carried out by the authorities in Australia and the United Kingdom could be jeopardised by the release of the transcript of the interview of Haneef Mohammed with the police. A court in Jodhpur has rejected an appeal against Salman Khan's conviction in a chinkara poaching case and has upholded the five-year jail term awarded to him by a lower court. The BSE's benchmark Sensex opened higher by over 152 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Friday on account of selective buying by funds. In the first five minutes of trade, the Sensex -which loss over 85 points in previous day's trading -bounced by 152.09 points at 14,316.07, while the Nifty rose by 49.35 points at 4,164.30.
