Sensex falls 432 points after gaining 209 points

On account of the possibility of snap polls at the centre, there was a heavy selling at the stock markets resulting in the Sensex tumbling by 432.15 points. After touching a new intra-day high of 17,982.59, the Sensex fell to a low of 17,550.44.

The Vodafone CEO, Arun Sarin, is coming to India tomorrow, while the companies is in the midst of a controversy regarding a $1.7 billion tax liability arising on account of the Hutch-Vodafone deal. Sarin, who also is the Vice-Chairman of Vodafone-Essar, is likely to meet senior government officials during his stay here.

The Indians having chosen to bat in a must-win match have out up a score of 291 for 4 wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Sachin Tendulkar top scored for the Indians scoring 79 of 119 bals. Towards the end of the innings some big hitting by skipper Dhoni who smashed a half centruy off 35 balls and Robin Uthappa's 30 off just 18 deliveries helped India post a reasonable target against the Aussies.

Ali Asgar Lobi, the former president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was sentenced to 13 years in jail as part of the emergency government's crackdown on corruption. Lobi was jailed for amassing illegal wealth worth 240 million taka (3.5 million dollars) and concealing income and was also fined one million taka and had his illegally-held property confiscated.

Malaysia has said that India and China, which have close ties with Yangon, should play their roles in bringing peace and stability to Myanmar. The Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said that his country was against imposing additional economic sanctions on Myanmar as that would hit the people who were already suffering from deprivation.

A slight earthquake having an intensity of 4.8 on the Richter scale, struck the Kutch area of Gujarat on Monday morning. There were no reports of any damage caused by the quake. In 2001, the region was ravaged by a devastating quake which claimed hundreds of lives.
