Police lapses in Mumbai riots to be probed

The Maharashtra government has directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to conduct an investigation to ascertain if there were any lapses in handling the 1992-1993 riot cases. The Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh claimed that he had given the Congress President Sonia Gandhi a status report on the action taken on the findings of the Srikrishna commission report.

49 pc Australians approve govt handling of Haneef case : Survey

As per the findings of a Newspoll survey conducted for 'The Australian' newspaper last weekend, 49 per cent Australian citizens approved the handling of the Haneef case by the Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews while 36 per cent disapproved. The Haneef Mohammed episode has become a major talking point for the John Howard government in Australia.

HIV+ children seek adoption

Seven-year old Sundar, who is HIV+, lives at Ashray, a Mumbai-based NGO, which provides food and shelter to HIV positive children, after his parents died of AIDS. Sundar was recently adopted by a social worker, Agnes, who also adopted his siblings, who are HIV+.

The Shiv Sena has responded in it's trademark manner to suggestions that the Srikrishna Commission Report on the 1992-93 riots in Mumbai be reopened. A provocative article in the Sena mouthpiece, 'Saamna' states that reopening the cases against rioters means that 'the Hindus will hang'.

The Lashkar-e-Tayiba's operational commander for Kashmir was killed in an operation which involved the police and the army. A police spokesman said that, Tayab alias Abu Talha, the LET operational commander for Kashmir was killed in Hanjipora village of north Kashmir in a joint operation conducted by the Kupwara police and the troops of 1/11 Gorkha regiment.

The Senior Congress leader, Margaret Alva said that the Maharashtra government is ready to take action against those indicted in the Srikrishna Commission report if the Supreme Court directs them to do so. There are reports stating that the Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is seeking legal opinion prior to reopening the cases against politicians in connection with the 1992/93 riots.

Sanjay Dutt's petition seeking interim bail will be heard by the Supreme Court on Friday. Yesterday, Dutt had filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging his conviction by the TADA court, which had sentenced him to six years rigorous imprisonment under the Arms Act.

The Australian Federal Court has adjourned the hearing on an appeal by Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef against cancellation of his work visa. The adjournement came after the court heard the lawyers' argument that the decision to revoke the document was legally flawed.

The CBI has written a letter to it's Pakistan counterparts, the Federal Investigating Agency (FIA) to verify the reports regarding the detention of Indian fugitive and underworld Don, Dawood Ibrahim by authorities there. There have been reports stating that Dawood has been injured in a scuffle in Karachi.

Countdown begins for launch of Endeavour: NASA

The NASA upon completion of one final test to ensure the space shuttle's crew cabin was airtight, has begun the countdown for the launch of the Endeavour. "The team is ready. Endeavour is ready", the NASA test director Stephen Payne was quoted saying. The launch is now scheduled for Wednesday.
