Moderate intensity quake hits Kutch : Gujarat

A slight earthquake having an intensity of 4.8 on the Richter scale, struck the Kutch area of Gujarat on Monday morning. There were no reports of any damage caused by the quake. In 2001, the region was ravaged by a devastating quake which claimed hundreds of lives.

A tsunami alert was issued on Wednesday to the Andaman and Nicobar islands, after a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale stuck Indonesia. Meanwhile the Central government asked the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration to monitor the situation.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's densely-populated East Java resulting in panic and damaging numerous houses however no serious casualties were reported. The quake hit at 1:36 am local time and was centered about 100 kilometres underground, 43 kilometres southeast of the town of Situbondo.

The capital of Taiwan was struck by a strong earthquake which shook buildings and awoke residents from their sleep, howeevr no damage or injuries were reported. The Central Weather Bureau said that a temblor having a magnitude of 6.6 struck at sea, 74 kilometres southeast of the eastern city of Ilan near Taipei at 1:51 am local time.

Survivors wearing blankets were found walking like ghosts through the ruins.
