Following the broadcast of a sting operation by a Hindi television news channel which showed a woman teacher with the Asaf Ali Road branch of the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya allegedly pushing students into prostitution, an angry mob went on a rampage. Two dozen vehicles were damaged and a police gypsy was burnt during the mob violence.

In the past 24 hours, violent clashes in northern and eastern Sri Lanka have resulted in the deaths of at least 17 people. Inmates of the district jail in Sultanpur clashed with security personnel,killing five persons including three prisoners and two jail guards and injuring over fifty persons.The trouble began after the jail superintendent interrogated an inmate who was found possessing a mobile phone during a routine check.
