Following a truce with the Left parties on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that India cannot afford to miss the bus of nuclear renaissance. Singh said that fast reactor technologies should be expeditiously developed and that efforts should be increased to locate additional uranium resources in the country.

The Australian Foreign Affairs Minister, Alexander Downer will put a recommendation to the National Security Committee to commence the export of uranium to India. Australia may sell uranium to India

India may be able to purchase uranium from Australia although it is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if Canberra approves a submission from Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer. Downer will ask the Cabinet to approve the export of Australian uranium to India in a submission, which will be considered by the government within weeks.
