Sania Mirza's juggernaut came to an abrupt halt in the third round of the US Open, following a roadblock in the form of Anna Chakvetadze. Mirza lost to the sixth seeded Chakvetadze 6-2, 6-3 at the Flushing Meadows on Saturday and this was her fourth career loss to the Russian.

Serena Williams cruised to an easy victory over her opponent, 10th seeded Marion Bartoli of France to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open. Serena showed no adverse effects of her lingering thumb injury to beat Bartoli 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile her elder sister, Venus Williams kept the pressure on No 5 Ana Ivanovic and beat her 6-4, 6-2.

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza has reached the second round of the US Open in the doubles tournament. Mirza and her doubles partner Bethanie Mattek beat Severine Bremond of France and Jelena Jankovic of Serbia by a convincing 6-2, 6-1 margin. They will now face Jarmila Gajdosova of Slovakia and Bryamne Stewart of Australia.

Despite her inconsistent performance, Serena Williams made it to the third round of the U.S. Open after beating jer opponent Italian Maria Elena Camerin 7-5 6-2. "I feel like I played better than I did in my first match," Williams said.

Roger Federer began the US Open, with a straight sets victory over American Scoville Jenkins 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Top seeded Federer who is attempting his fourth successive Open title demolished his opponent in 92 minutes. Meanwhile Justine Henin beat her opponent German Julia Goerges 6-0, 6-3 in 62 minutes.

Argentinian Angel Cabrera bagged his first major, by winning the 2007 US Open. Cabrera beat Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods by one shot to clinch a thrilling win. Prior to this win, the World number 44 had claimed six top-10 finishes in majors but none better than fourth.
