CHENNAI: Twenty eight people have lost their lives in Tamil Nadu as heavy rains, under the influence of a depression over the Bay of Bengal, lashed different parts of the state, throwing normal life out of gear.
The depression, centred about 50 km off the Vedaranyam coast, is likely cross the coast on Wednesday evening between Vedanrayam and Pamban, the Meteorological office said.

Karunanidhi called the meeting of leaders of legislature to chalk out the next course of action as there is no sign of Sri Lanka declaring a ceasefire.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday congratulated Viswanathan Anand for winning his third World Chess Championship title in Germany.
An official release quoted the Chief Minister as saying that Anand has brought laurels to India and Tamil Nadu, his native state, and recalled the two earlier instances in Iran in 2000 and Mexico in 2007 where he had won the titles.
