A Pakistani man committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a Kalashnikov assault rifle to protest against continual power cuts, his family said on Monday. Laiq Sher, 18, killed himself on Saturday after his relatives stopped him from blocking a road to show his anger at blackouts in his village near the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Hit by militancy for nearly two decades, Kashmir valley has witnessed a sharp rise in suicide cases over the past two years owing to varied reasons ranging from unemployment to marital discord. While 61 persons committed suicide last year, the figure stand at 42 so far for the year 2007.
