The Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunsi said that the central government will leave no stone unturned to punish those found guilty by the Srikrishna Commission report. Dasmunsi added that the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was concerned over the report and had urged the Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh to take actions per the findings of the report.

The Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh met Sonia Gandhi and expressed his displeasure with the action taken on the Srikrishna Commission report. The Maharashtra government has directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to conduct an investigation to ascertain if there were any lapses in handling the 1992-1993 riot cases. The election manifesto of the Congress-NCP in 2004 promised that the Srikrishna Commission report would be implemented, however nine years since the release of the report, those indicted by the Commission are yet to be taken to task. The Senior Congress leader, Margaret Alva said that the Maharashtra government is ready to take action against those indicted in the Srikrishna Commission report if the Supreme Court directs them to do so. There are reports stating that the Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is seeking legal opinion prior to reopening the cases against politicians in connection with the 1992/93 riots.
