The voting in one of the most bitterly contested Presidential election has come to an end with the UPA-Left candidate, Pratibha Patil, most likely to be the first woman President of India. The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi were among the first to cast their votes in the polls, in which Patil has a clear edge over NDA-backed independent Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

A public interest litigation(PIL)filed by Manohar Lal Sharma questioning the candidature of Mrs Pratibha Patil, the UPA candidate for the Presidential elections has been dismissed by the Supreme Court. The bench of the SC said that they did not find any merit in the petition adding that it was more a 'private interest litigation'.
