The UPA-Left candidate, seems all set to become the first woman President of India, when the counting of votes commences on Saturday. Pratibha Patil is projected to secure over six lakh votes, while her rival Bhairon Singh Shekhawat is likely to get a little over 3.5 lakh votes in his favour, in one of the murkiest presidential battle in India's history.

The election of Pratibha Patil, to the post of President, was supposed to be a proud and historic day for Indian women, however it has snowballed into a major embarrassment for the government. The scandals which Patil is embroiled in as well as her tendency of putting her foot in her mouth, threathens to undermine the post of President.

In response to the controversy over the Shiv Sena's support to the UPA-Left Presidential candidate, Mrs Pratibha Patil, the Sena asked the BJP to understand its political compulsions and not to unnecessarily create an altercation. “Shiv Sena does not want the alliance with BJP to break and they (BJP) should refrain from making harsh statements,” counselled Mr Udhav Thackeray.

Although he has withdrawn from the race, President APJ Abdul Kalam is India's most favoured candidate for the post of President. Prez Kalam topped a poll conducted by NDTV, getting 69 per cent of the votes. Meanwhile, Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat came in second with 17 per cent of the votes and the UPA's candidate Pratibha Patil came in third with 14 per cent of the votes.
