Indian national Sarabjit Singh, accused of being involved in a bombing incident, would be hanged on April 1, Pakistani officials announced on Sunday. Pakistan’s Supreme Court had rejected his appeal for clemency and President Musharraf also rejected his mercy petition this month.

The President of Pakistan's ruling party, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, said that President Musharraf would resign from his post as chief of the army staff before the parliamentary elections which are scheduled for the first week of January, but he would run for re-election as president in the coming weeks, while still in uniform.

Inspite of claims by former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto that President Musharraf had agreed to shed his army role as part of a power-sharing deal, the President made it clear to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League leaders yesterday that he would contest the election in uniform.

Pakistan is on the verge of declaring a state of Emergency with the government finalising a plan for doing so, according to media reports. A private news channel reports that President Musharraf has decided to declare emergency for a month, which could be extended to three months.

Former cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan said that the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is "sunk" as he has "lost touch" with the people and hence must resign. Khan also argued that if the President tried to impose martial law or attempted to have himself re-elected ahead of next year's general elections, he would be challenged in the supreme court.

In a possible retaliation bid by hardliners, protesting against the crackdown on the radical Lal Masjid, rockets and anti-aircraft guns were fired from a Rawalpindi house close to the runaway of the military airbase used by President Pervez Musharraf while his plane was in air. However it is not ascertianed whether the rockets and the firing were directed at Musharraf's plane.

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in Pakistan was in for widespread criticism for suggesting that President Pervez Musharraf should desist from attending public rallies. The Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sher Afgan referred to the CEC's statement as "premature and inappropriate".
