Inspite of weak cues from the US markets, the Indian markets opened strongly with the Sensex surging past the 17,500 mark. At 9:59 am (IST), the Sensex rose by 289 points to 17,618 and NSE Nifty has surged by 76 points to cross 5,145. The leading movers among the Sensex stocks were the Index heavyweights such as Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, Infosys and Reliance Communication and L&T.

Sensex up 100 points in early trade

The benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange on Monday gained nearly 100 points in the early trade on account of buying by funds in heavy weight stocks like Reliance Energy and Maruti. Meanwhile, the broad-based National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, rose by 32.50 points at 5,053.85 points.

Thanks to large scale buying by foreign and domestic financial institutions the 30-share BSE's benchmark index rose by 210.91 points to touch 17,361.47 at 1230 hours with shares in the metal and capital goods sectors rising sharply. Also the NSE's Nifty spurted by 49 points to its highest level of 5,049.55.

The Indian markets have followed the positive cues of the US and Asian markets to keep the momentum going. At 9:58am (IST), the BSE 30-share Sensex has gained by 72 points to 17,222 and NSE Nifty is up by 20 points at 5,020. Index heavyweights such as ICICI Bank, Tata Steel, L&T and Reliance Industries were the leading movers among the Sensex stocks.

Nifty reaches all time high - 5000

The 50-share benchmark index of the NSE, closely followed the Sensex and reached the 5000 mark for the first time. The NIFTY took 204 sessions since December 14, 2006, to make the 25% upmove from 4000 to 5000, while the Sensex rose 27% in the same period. On Thursday, the Nifty was up 60.05 points or 1.22% at 5,000.55, an all time closing high.

The 30-share benchmark Sensex ended 22 points higher to close at 16,921 hitting an intra-day high of 17,073 and a low of 16,887 while the NSE Nifty ended flat at 4,940 touching an intra-day high of 4,980 and low of 4,930. It was a historic day for the markets as the Sensex touched the 17k milestone in the early trades.
