The Municipal Corporations in Maharashtra and the state government have been directed by the Bombay High Court to take steps to avoid incidents of water-logging from next monsoon. This move comes as a wake up call to the Municipal Corporation, to ensure that heavy rains in the state's capital, do not bring the city down to it's knees.

Kerala receives torrential rain, causing damages

Many parts of Kerala recieved heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours, causing extensive losses and destruction. About 200 families were shifted to relief camps, mostly in Idukki and Wayanad districts. Four people were injured in landslides in ere injured in landslips in Idukki and Palakkad where 15 houses were destroyed.

Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said that, 52 people have lost their lives and 9000 have been evacuated and relocated to relief camps on account of the torrential rains that lashed the state over the weekend. The Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is touring the US and his deputy Patil has been officiating in his absence.

Monsoons hit Delhi early

The monsoons have hit Delhi a day prior to the scheduled arrival date, the normal onset date for the capital is June 29. "Monsoon has set in over the capital a day ahead of the normal onset date," India Meteorological Department Director and spokesman B P Yadav said.

Mumbai received 279 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, which is about 10 per cent of its annual quota. The first signs of the south-west monsoon hitting India's commercial hub were visible with flooded streets and stranded vehicles.

Mumbai city and its surrounding areas faced the onslaught of the monsoons with heavy rains lashing the city for almost 24 hours beginning Saturday evening. Warnings were issued to fishermen not to venture into the sea. The city of Mumbai witnessed widespread flooding with the water receding only late Sunday afternoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the southwest monsoon is progressing well and is likely to advance further into remaining parts of Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra, entire Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan during the next five days.
