The army has inducted four more battalions in Kashmir and has activated two reserve brigades to fight militancy and stop infiltration along the line of Control. The main idea behind this move is to contain the militants at the border itseld, rather than letting them enter and engaging them in the hinterland.

Suicides on rise in Kashmir

Hit by militancy for nearly two decades, Kashmir valley has witnessed a sharp rise in suicide cases over the past two years owing to varied reasons ranging from unemployment to marital discord. While 61 persons committed suicide last year, the figure stand at 42 so far for the year 2007.

Policeman injured in militant attack in J&K

A policeman was injured when militants opened fire at a police station in Udhampur district on Saturday, police said here. Militants fired at the police station in Basantgarh area of the district at 4.30 am on Saturday, they said, adding policemen on duty retaliated and the exchange of fire between two sides continued for some time.

Like father, son too dies fighting militants

Shalley Singh was offered a police job after his father, Inspector Udayveer Singh, died fighting militants in 1993. He quickly built a reputation, killing scores of militants and becoming a Dy SP in the J&K Special Operations Group. Yesterday, he died fighting Lashkar militants in Bhaderwah.
