Lal Masjid : Total death toll 91

The one and a half day military operation to flush out militants joled up in the Lal Masjid resulted in the death of 91 people including 10 security personnel. 73 militants have been killed in the operation, however there have not been any women casualties so far.

The Lal Masjid's chief cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz, who was arrested last week while attempting to flee disguised in a burqua, provided vital clues to the Pakistani security forces. The information provided by Aziz about the network of militants inside the Lal Masjid premises, proved helpful to the armed forces when they stormed the mosque complex.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman Khalil, the chief of the banned outfit, Harkatul Mujahideen has been taken into protective custody by the Pakistan police. Khalil, who features in the list of India's most wanted, was a close aide of Abdul Ghazi, the slain radical cleric of the Lal Masjid. The Pakistani authorities used Khalil as part of the negotiating team, which held talks with Ghazi on Monday night.

Lal Masjid : Standoff ends, commandos flush out militans

The Pakistani military commandos have flushed the Lal Masjid of all the militants holed up in it's premises, after an operation that ended a bloody eight-day siege in which more than 80 were killed including the radical cleric, Abdul Rashid Ghazi.

US denies role in Lal Masjid operation

Although the US backed Pakistan,in it's decision to storm the Lal Masjid and flush out the militants holed up in it's precints, the US categorically denied playing any role in the military operation. When asked about the US involvement in the Lal Masjid operation, the State Department spokesperson Sean McCormack denied any role saying: "Not that I know of. I doubt it."
