The Lal Masjid in Pakistan has been sealed off by the Pakistani government following a suicide attack which resulted in the death of 15 people during clashes between Islamic extremists and security forces. Poliemen have set up new checkpoints and cordoned off the area around the Masjid compound. "The mosque will now remain closed for an indefinite period": the Interior Ministry spokesman said.

The Jamia Hafsa girls madrassa, which is attached to the Lal Masjid in Islamabad will be demolished as the building is not stable following the July 11 military raid on the complex. The decision to demolish the building has been taken by the Pakistani Government, however, the Pakistan religious parties have opposed its demolition and are keen to run the madrassa.

The Lal Masjid in Pakistan is all set to be transformed, following the Interior Minister's approval of a Rs 13 million plan to renovate and remodel the badly damaged Mosque complex. The Mosque will sport a new image - including a new name, a moderate cleric heading it and its colour changed to green instead of red.

The Pakistani intelligence appeared to play a role in derailing the Lal Masjid deal by jamming the mobile phone of slain radical cleric Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi, when he seemed agreeable to the demands of Chaudhury Shujaat, the negotiator sent by the government, in terms of releasing 15 to 20 people, according to sources.

The Pakistan Supreme Court has expressed it's displeasure over the continued detention of the surrendered "students" of Lal Masjid's madrassas. The court has added that as per the law, no one can be kept in detention for more than 24 hours and has to be produced before a court within that period.
