Salman Rushdie, whose knighthood, has led to a furore and sparked widespread protests in different parts of the world, has chosen to avoid commenting on the issue. Rushdie, who has a Fatwa issued against him for his book 'The Satanic Verses' by the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, has lived in hiding for a decade.

Pakistan on Friday observed a countrywide protest against the knighthood awarded to Salman Rushdie by the British government. The Pakistani National Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution on Friday, asking the Blair government to immediately withdraw the knighthood which has hurt the feelings of the entire Muslim community.

The British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Robert Brinkley, was called to the Foreign Office and told that it was not expected from the UK government, which has a large Muslim population, to honour Rushdie whose writings have 'hurt' Muslims all over the world, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said.
