The Amarnath Yatra which began on Monday after a delayed start, witnessed it's first casualty when a woman pilgrim was killed on the spot and nine others injured in a freak incident caused by falling stones .Police said the tragedy was caused by loosening of the stones by recent rains and high velocity winds near the holy cave.

Deccan to provide helicopter services for Amarnath pilgrims

Deccan Aviation Limited (DAL), which owns the country's largest private sector heli-charter company, has been awarded a three-year contract for providing helicopter services for the Amarnath Yatra. The Amarnath Yatra is organised annually during the months of July and August by the Jammu & Kashmir government.

Srinagar: Strike to protest against knighthood on Rushdie

A strike has been declared in Srinagar on Friday to protest against the knighthood being conferred on Indian born author Salman Rushdie.Although business establishments were closed and public transport stayed off the roads, the strike which was called by armed militant groups and separatist leaders, was only partially successful with private transport vehicles and autorickshaws plying normally.

Two security force personnel and two militants, believed to be part of a suicide squad, were killed and nine others injured during the past 24 hours in Kashmir. A police spokesman said that a soldier and a CRPF trooper were killed when militants resorted to indiscriminate firing on an Army convoy at main Chowk in Sopore town on Friday.
