The answer to this question, I must admit upfront, will not come from this column. Nor is it likely to be provided by the selectors, even though they have kept him out of the Rest of India side to play the Irani Trophy, which is ostensibly the trial match for the series against Australia, later this month.

The Rest of the India squad for the Irani Trophy, touted as a virtual Test team, just lost one of it’s most important players. In a fitness report sent to the Board of Control for Cricket in India by NCA physio Paul Close, Tendulkar has been advised to sit out the Irani Trophy because he is still experiencing stiffness in the elbow. Thanks to a five-wicket haul by paceman Munaf Patel, the Rest of India beat the Ranji champions Mumbai on the final day of their Irani Trophy encounter on Tuesday. Mumbai were earlier all out for 106, thus setting a small target of 88 runs for Rest of India, who achieved the score in just 18.5 overs.
