The Government said that the inflation for the week ended September 15 was down 3.23% on account of cheaper fruits & vegetables and other food items. It was below the average expectations of 3.45% to 3.47% while the annual point-to-point inflation rate stood at 3.32% in the previous week and was 5.27% during the corresponding week of the previous year.

The Reserve Bank of India in its annual report said that the rate of inflation in India remained higher compared to other emerging markets as also the advanced economies in 2006-07. Although the inflation remained within the RBI's projection of 5.0-5.5 per cent up to November 11, 2006, between January 6 and March 24, 2007 it was above six per cent.

As per government data, India's wholesale price index has risen by 3.94 per cent in the 12 months to August 18, lower than the previous week's 4.10 per cent on account of a decline in the prices of some manufactured products. For the first time since the end of April 2006 the annual inflation has been below 4 per cent.

The inflation for the week ended July 28 has risen to 4.45 per cent from 4.36 per cent for the previous week. The reason for the rise in the inflation is the increase in the prices of essential food items as well as some manufactured products.

Indian wholesale price inflation eased to its lowest in 10 months, holding within the Reserve Bank of India's comfort zone, but analysts said strong industrial growth meant the central bank would remain vigilant.The widely tracked wholesale price index rose 4.80 percent in the 12 months to June 2, slowing from 4.85 percent a week earlier and well below a two-year high of 6.69 percent in January.

For the first time in eight months, inflation fell below the five per cent mark to stand at 4.85 per cent for the week ended May 26 from 5.06 per cent in the previous week, as food items and some manufactured products turned cheaper.This would ease pressure off the RBI to further tighten monetary policies, even as the burden from excess liquidity in the system continues, analysts said.

Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council chairman C Rangarajan today said the economy was witnessing "cyclical overheating" but expected inflation to soften in coming months with good monsoon this year. He described cyclical overheating as one that occurs when the existing capacity was fully utilised and the demand was still increasing.
