The Independence Day celebrations in Jammu and Kashmir passed off peacefully on Wednesday as the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad unfurled the national flag and took salute at a well-attended function at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar. However the streets of Srinagar wore a deserted look due to a shutdown call by the separatists.

Independence Day was celebrated at the Indian consulte in New York without much fanfare. A crowd of 500 people congregated the venue, which included the likes of author Kiran Desai. National anthems of India and the US were played followed by a reading of the Indian President's message to the nation by the Indian Consul General Neelam Deo.

Police register case for direspecting the national flag

The police have registered a case against the authorities of the Calicut University for allegedly showing "disrespect" to the national flag by hoisting it "upside down" on Independence Day. Meanwhile the University authorities have issued apologies for the "inadvertent mistake".
