National Aviation Company of India (Nacil), which is the recently created holding company for the national carriers Air India and Indian, is planning to offload 10-15% stake through an initial public offering (IPO) in 2008. The civil aviation minister Praful Patel said that the proceeds of the public offer woulf fund expansion and take on competition from private airlines.

Power Grid Corporation Ltd. (PGCIL) made its debut on the stock market and the price of its shares have more than doubled on the NSE. The scrip which was offered at a price of of Rs52 per share opened at Rs89.80 and was quoting at Rs104.55 on the NSE at 10:12 a.m. The traded volume on the counter surged to 172.88mn shares on the NSE.

The fact that the Indian economy is in top flight cannot be disputed. As a consequence, scores of Indian companies are tapping the stock markets to raise capital for their expansion plans. India is ranked seven among the worlds biggest IPO markets in the first eight months of this year and its share in the global IPO proceeds is now 3.5 per cent, as compared to 1.7 per cent in 2006.

The shares of Kaveri Seed Company Ltd. - a company manufacturing hybrid seeds - rose almost 54% as the company made its debut on the stock market. The shares which were offered at Rs170 during the IPO, opened at Rs201.15 on the BSE and later was quoting at Rs255.15 after touching a high of Rs262. The volumes touched 2.61mn shares on BSE.
