The Queensland Health Minister Stephen Robertson said that Dr Haneef Mohammed could be re-registered to work at the Gold Coast hospital in Queensland and that would be happy to have him back. The news came a day after Haneef's working visa for Australia was returned by the Australian authorities.

Dr Haneef Mohammed's colleague at the Gold Coast hospital, Dr Mohammed Asif Ali who is currently being detained in connection with Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef's case is believed to be trying to leave Australia as early as Thursday. Dr Asif Ali's lawyer said that his client was hoping that the Australian Federal Police return his passport on Thursday in order that he can leave the country.

As per the findings of a Newspoll survey conducted for 'The Australian' newspaper last weekend, 49 per cent Australian citizens approved the handling of the Haneef case by the Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews while 36 per cent disapproved. The Haneef Mohammed episode has become a major talking point for the John Howard government in Australia.
