Just when everyone thought India's next coach would be selected on June 4, the BCCI, true to form, surprised everyone by announcing two new, relatively unknown names, as candidates for the post. On the face of it, Dav Whatmore looked like the most suitable candidate, but apparently Graham Ford and John Emburey bring more to the table.

Graham Ford, the South African in the running to take over as India’s cricket coach, has lost his frontrunner advantage, with Englishman John Emburey coming abreast of him with Sunil Gavaskar’s support.According to sources, Emburey now has as much of a chance as Ford.

Given his experience and achievements as a coach, if not as a player, Graham Xavier Ford, who has been shortlisted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, is likely to take up the reins of Team India from Greg Chappell. Of course, it's a different matter altogether whether Ford will be able to drive Team India forward.

South Africa's Graham Ford has emerged a prime contender for the job of India coach, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India deciding to invite him and another unnamed foreigner for discussions on June 9.

The BCCI on Monday confirmed that it has received an application from South African Graham Ford for the Team India coach's post. "We have received an application from Graham Ford. Besides, Dav Whatmore expressed his wish during the tour of Bangladesh," said BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah.
