Britain faced it's worst ever flood in 60 years as the river Thames broke it's banks, resulting in hundreds of homes in the university city of Oxford being evacuated. The people living along the Thames have been warned that the water level could rise in the light of heavy rains.

The Municipal Corporations in Maharashtra and the state government have been directed by the Bombay High Court to take steps to avoid incidents of water-logging from next monsoon. This move comes as a wake up call to the Municipal Corporation, to ensure that heavy rains in the state's capital, do not bring the city down to it's knees.

Floodwaters recede in Gujarat, Maharashtra

Most of the affected areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra which were flooded due to heavy rains can heave a sigh of relief as the floodwaters have receded but heavy rainfall has been predicted across these states.The state government has asked both the army and navy to remain on standby. The death-toll due to flooding is 52 in Maharashtra and 84 in Gujarat.

Monsoon Fury: 52 dead in Maharashtra

Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said that, 52 people have lost their lives and 9000 have been evacuated and relocated to relief camps on account of the torrential rains that lashed the state over the weekend. The Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is touring the US and his deputy Patil has been officiating in his absence.

Heavy rains: Railway services affected

The Central Railway's services were affected on account of incessant rains, which resulted in flooding of railway tracks.According to Railway officials, at least 17 outstation trains from the city, including the inter-city trains, had to be cancelled and many rescheduled. Even the Western Railway faced problems with many trains being cancelled or running behind schedule.

Mumbai city and its surrounding areas faced the onslaught of the monsoons with heavy rains lashing the city for almost 24 hours beginning Saturday evening. Warnings were issued to fishermen not to venture into the sea. The city of Mumbai witnessed widespread flooding with the water receding only late Sunday afternoon.

750 huts razed for widening Mithi

As part of the Mithi River Development Project, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday undertook a demolition drive in Kurla (W) where around 750 hutments on the bank of the river were pulled down. Mithi River is being widened to 100 metre on the downstream of airport to Kurla side and roads of 12 metre width are being constructed on either side.
