A notification has been issued by the Election Commission for filing nominations for the post of Vice-President. The filing of nominations for the poll began on Monday and will go till July 23. While the scrutiny of nominations will take place on July 24, the last date for the withdrawal of candidature will be on July 26.

Closely following the Supreme Court's decision to reject a lawyer's plea challenging the nomination of Pratibha Patil in the Presidential elections, The Election Commission has rejected BJP leader L K Advani's demand that presidential candidates be asked to declare their assets, saying it is not empowered to deal with the issue.

The much-awaited process to elect President A P J Abdul Kalam’s successor to Rashtrapati Bhavan was set in motion today with the Election Commission announcing July 19 as the date for holding the presidential poll. The result will be out on July 21, three days before Kalam completes his term.
