Referring to the Supreme Court ruling allowing the Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf to contest the elections in uniform as an "internal matter" of the country, the US said it wanted to see a "smooth and successful transition" to democratic civilian government in Pakistan.

The former Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharif vowed to make a comeback to Pakistan and fight to end President Pervez Musharraf's rule. Sharif, who was overthrown by Musharraf, in a military coup in 1999, criticised the United States administration for supporting President Musharraf although it (US) believed in promoting democracy.
