A week ago Dav Whatmore's appointment as the Indian cricket team's coach was almost a certainty. But things took a dramatically different turn at the meeting in Bangalore on Monday, June 4, when the seven-member selection committee sat down to finalise the new coach.
Shockingly, Whatmore was not given the job and the committee asked for a few more days to name the new coach.

With the BCCI pushing John Emburey for the post of coach for Team India, the question doing the rounds is: what happened to Dav Whatmore? It turns out that Whatmore — touted to have been the front-runner — was never in contention as far as the Indian players or experts like Sunil Gavaskar and S Venkatraghavan were concerned.

The BCCI on Monday confirmed that it has received an application from South African Graham Ford for the Team India coach's post. "We have received an application from Graham Ford. Besides, Dav Whatmore expressed his wish during the tour of Bangladesh," said BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah.

Outgoing Bangladesh cricket coach Dav Whatmore, who is eyeing the top job in India, believes the captain is the boss of a team. "Definitely, captain is the boss. He is in-charge of the team," Whatmore said at a media interaction here.

Current Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore is the frontrunner for being appointed as India's next cricket coach.The players, however, want current manager Ravi Shastri and are not willing to accept anyone else. Shastri has television commitments, which will not allow him to take on the role.
