Mumbai: Keen to start work on the international airport in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan would be giving a letter to the Prime Minister requesting to amend Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) norms to facilitate states with the CRZ norms, which restrict construction of the airport in CRZ area should be amended," an official from Urban Development Department told PTI.

At the hearing of a PIL filed by Shetkari Sangarsh Samiti from Pezari village, Alibaug, locals from the area opposed the state’s acquisition of the land for Maharashtra Energy Generation Limited (MEGL), a subsidiary of Reliance Energy Limited, which is proposing a 4,000mw natural gas and coal-based plant there. The locals contended that the land acquisition was in violation of CRZ norms.
