Bird flu: Culling operation on in Manipur

In a bid to prevent the spread of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in Manipur, the government began culling 1.6 lakh birds within a five kilometre radius of the site where the virus was detected. All chickens and other domesticated birds will be killed as part of the culling operation.

As per the findings of a governmenr laboratory, the outbreak of bird flu in poultry in Manipur was of the dangerous H5N1 strain. However, official were awaiting the results from a second laboratory before making an official declaration.
