Female Infanticide: Baby survives after being buried alive

In a shocking case of female infanticide, a two-day-old baby girl in India was buried alive in a field by her maternal grandfather in a village 150 km south of Hyderabad. The baby's grandfather, Abdul Rahman confessed that he attempted to kill the baby by burying her alive.
The baby was discovered by a farmer who spotted her hand sticking out of the soil under which she was buried.

HIV cases in India lesser than earlier estimated

On the basis of a study conducted by Avahan, which studies the HIV prevalence in India, it has been observed that India has significantly fewer HIV cases than previous studies indicated. According to a previous UN study, it was estimated that India would have 5.7 million cases of HIV, however Ashok Alexander the programme director said that the actual number was far lesser.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee that rammed into the terminal building at the Glasgow airport has been identified as Kafeel Ahmed. He is the elder brother of Dr Sabeel Ahmed who who was detained by the authorities for his alleged involvement in the terror plot.The brothers are from Bangalore and are the children of Doctors. Kafeel is in a hospital in Glasgow with 90 per cent burns.

The bodyguard of Japan's gender equality minister has been arrested on suspicion of molesting a female college student on a train.The 39-year-old bodyguard, who is a policeman, has been arrested on suspicion of touching a young woman's bottom on a train in Tokyo. The fellow passengers on board the train handed him over to the police.

The death toll in Maharashtra so far -on account of heavy rains- is 385, with 106 losing their lives in the past seven days itself. The rains have affected over 1.10 lakh people, with 6,000 houses having collapsed in the rains as stated by the Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh at a meeting of top government, police and defence officials.

Pooja Chauhan, the Rajkot resident, who raised eyebrows by walking semi-nude on the streets of the city to draw attention to her alleged torture for dowry, blamed the police for driving her to take that extreme step. She claimed that the police insensitivity and apathy were the main reason why she decided to protest by parading in her undergarments.

Time running out for boy stuck in borewell

A six year old boy, Suraj, fell into a borewell while playing and has been stuck since the past 38 hours.Efforts are on to rescue him, with the army helping in the rescue operations, however the hopes of his survival are fading. A crane which was used in the rescue efforts, ran over a local man, crushing him in the process.

Pak rejects cleric's demands: Lal Masjid standoff

A cleric who is holed up in the Lal Masjid is willing to surrender along with hundreds of his followers, provided the authorities accept his terms and conditions. However, the government rejected his demands saying they were unacceptable and insisted that the cleric should release the women and children who were being held as human shields.

The Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh offered the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, India's cooperation in the anti-terror investigation. However Mr Singh warned against labelling any country or community as terrorists, merely on the basis of suspicion, stating that if any community was targeted, it would create “new sets of grievances”.
