Heavy rains lash Maharashtra

Mumbai city and its surrounding areas faced the onslaught of the monsoons with heavy rains lashing the city for almost 24 hours beginning Saturday evening. Warnings were issued to fishermen not to venture into the sea. The city of Mumbai witnessed widespread flooding with the water receding only late Sunday afternoon.

Williams reunited with family after space sojourn

Indian-American Astronaut Sunita Williams who returned back to Earth after a sojourn of more than six months in space, was welcomed back as friends and well-wishers gave her a rousing reception. Williams,who was a little wobbly after months of weightlessness, said that she was getting used to gravity.

Foreign tourist inspires Ngo to undertake "clean Dal Lake" campaign

A German tourist, Marc Stollreiter and several other volunteers last Sunday removed tonnes of garbage from the Dal lake, thus inspiring an NGO to start a campaign to clean the famous Dal lake here as part of its efforts to save the water body from further damages.

Beating your child may land you in jail

The Union ministry of women and child development is drafting a law to make child abuse a punishable offence.Under the proposed law, called the Offences against Children Bill, penalties would include fines from Rs3,000 onwards. For first offences, parents may be let off after furnishing surety, but if the abuse is severe and repeated, it could lead to imprisonment of up to seven years.

Chennai airport on alert, bomb hoax

There was a bomb hoax at the Chennai airport which kept officials and security personnel on their toes for nearly three hours early on Monday. According to sources, an unidentified person telephoned around 3 am claiming that a bomb has been planted at the international terminal and would explode in the morning.
