The one-day-old smallpox scare has virtually blown over with a senior World Health Organisation official asserting there was no outbreak in Bangladesh or Myanmar.A foreign ministry communique about the alleged outbreak had prompted the Bengal government yesterday to declare a statewide alert.

A local court on Friday acquitted nine of the 10 accused in the bomb blasts that rocked the Andhra Pradesh capital in 1993. A Metropolitan Magistrate Court acquitted Shamshuddin, Zaheeruddin Ahmed, Azeemuddin, Nazeeruddin, Mohammed Yousuf, Mohammed Ansari (all from Karnataka) and M Gouse, Pasha and Aziz Akbar (all from Hyderabad).
