An Airbus-320 passenger jet owned by TAM airlines, skidded off the runway due to rain and crashed into a building, thus bursting into flames in what would be Brazil's deadliest air disaster.All 176 people on board were feared dead when the plane crashed into the airline's own offices.

The Australian Attorney-General Philip Ruddock has downplayed the possibility of a breach in diplomatic ties between India and Australia over the issue of the detention of Indian Doctor Mohammed Haneef, who has been detained without any incriminating evidence. "What I understand the Indian government said was they wanted that Haneef be dealt with justly," he said.

Haneef's case weakened by leak : Police

The leaking of a key document - containing the transcript of a police interview with Mohammed Haneef - to a newspaper, has weakened the prosecution's case against the Indian doctor, according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Mick Keelty. He also added that the police were probing whether the leak constituted an offence, such as contempt of court.

Having already overtaken Britain and France, the Chinese economy is all set to overtake Germany as the world's third-largest by the end of this year.
The Chinese economy grew at a very fast pace in the first half of 2007-- at 11.1 percent instead of 10.7 percent as per earlier forecasts -- to produce an economy worth 21.09 trillion yuan (2.65 trillion dollars).

105th member to the Global Criminal Court: Japan

On 17th July, which is the World Day for International Justice, Japan ratified the treaty establishing the International Criminal Court by depositing papers with the United Nations legal department. With this Japan became the 105th member of the first global criminal court, set up to prosecute individuals for the world's worst atrocities such as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef claims that he had no knowledge about the failed bombings in the UK in which his second cousins are the main accused. Haneef has been charged with "recklessly" supporting a terrorist organisation, as he supplied his cousin - who is an accused in the terror plot- with a SIM card. He feels he will be "framed" for his actions.

Delhi is on it's way to becoming the most intolerant city in India. After a spate of road accidents over the last few weeks, a 35-year old man was beaten to death by a group of youngsters after his car brushed against the motorcycle owned by one of them. According to DCP Anil Shukla, a minor altercation between the two parties led to a major incident, resulting in the death of the man.

13 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack on Tuesday outside a court in the Pakistani capital Islamabad where the country's suspended chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, was due to speak. However, Justice Chaudhary- who has become a symbol of resistance to President Pervez Musharraf's 8-year rule- had not arrived at the time of the blast.
