'Raped' & hung from tree

The body of a 13-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in a mango orchard this morning.
Police suspect that the teenager, a resident of Harishchandrapur village, 100 km from here, was raped before she was hung from a branch of the tree.

Life term for killer extortionists

Five extortionists were sentenced to life in jail today for killing a 24-year-old from Howrah who had raised his voice against them. Joy Mukherjee (in picture), a resident of Dharsa in Jagachha and an agent of a private bank, was murdered on the night of October 19, 2005.

The wife of the former Pakistan cricket coach, Bob Woolmer, expressed relief on Tuesday after the Jamaican police finally declared that he was not murdered but died of natural causes. "We are relieved that it has been officially announced that Bob died of natural causes," Gill Woolmer told AFP from her home in Pinelands, Cape Town. "It is now over."

An outbreak of a disease with chikungunya-like symptoms has affected a large number of residents in the village of Pushpagiri near Mysore over the last few weeks. While residents say that scores of families have been infected, district Health Department officials restrict the number of reported cases to 55 in the last seven days.

Fourteen bogies of a superfast train got unhitched from its engine last night, ran on and jumped rails but did not tip over totally on their sides, thanks to earthen embankments flanking the tracks.
Three passengers in the Howrah-bound 2659 Gurudev Express died in the freak crash but almost 500 in the derailed coaches providentially survived with minor cuts and bruises.

After visiting 10 jails in Pakistan, relatives of Indian PoWs have failed to locate their dear ones even as a retired Pakistani Army official claimed on Tuesday that one of the 54 soldiers being searched had been killed in 1971 war.
