'Rice may have prevented Pak emergency' : Report

The Pakistani President reportedly, decided against imposing a state of emergency on account of the American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Rice made two calls to the president, besides the President also received calls from some top officials of the European Union who dissuaded him from imposing emergency.

The United Progressive Alliance-Left candidate Hamid Ansari has been elected as the 13th vice-president of India. Ansari defeated the National Democratic Alliance candidate Najma Heptulla and the Third Front candidate Rashid Masood in the vice-presidential elections. 'Train runs over two elephants' : Assam

A freight train ran over two elephants in a bird sanctuary in Assam, the train was derailed as a result. According to a wildlife official the incident occured between Azara and Kamakhya railway stations while a herd of 20-odd elephants was crossing the track. One of the elephants killed was a calf.
