The former Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharif has returned to Pakistan from exile to lead a campaign to topple the Pervez Musharraf-led military regime. Sharif was ousted in a military coup by Musharraf eight years ago. The former PM prior to leaving London claimed that the President Musharraf government might try to arrest or deport him upon landing in Pakistan.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's densely-populated East Java resulting in panic and damaging numerous houses however no serious casualties were reported. The quake hit at 1:36 am local time and was centered about 100 kilometres underground, 43 kilometres southeast of the town of Situbondo.

The homeland security advisor to the US President George W Bush, Fran Townsend said that the Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is "virtually impotent" and can do little more than send videotaped messages. Townsend also said that US officials were studying bin Laden's new video tape for clues to his health or whereabouts, and whether there were any hidden meanings or messages.

Army foils second infiltration bid : J&K

The Security forces foiled the second infiltration bid in two days when they gunned down four intruders on Sunday night along the Line of Control in north Kashmir. The former Pakistani Premier's return to Pakistan after a seven year exile was shortlived as he was deported back to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan hoping to overthrow the President Musharraf, however, four hours after he arrived in Pakistan, he was taken into custody and charged with corruption and was flown out of Pakistan.
