The Australian authorities have sent a senior federal police official to India in connection with the investigation of Indian terror suspect Haneef Mohammed who was detained by the Australian authorities. The Australian authorities are yet to ascertian Haneef's links with those accused in the failed bombings in the UK.

Troops storm Lal Masjid, 23 killed

The Pakistani army stormed the compound of Islamabad's Lal Masjid resulting in a fierce battle with militants holed up in the mosque. The militants put up a 'tough resistance' resulting in the deaths of at least three soldiers and 20 militants in the assault.

The lives of more than 800 cats were saved in China, thanks to the power of the Internet. An internet posting by an animal rights activist, Huo Puyang, stating that two trucks carrying cats in wooden boxes had been intercepted, resulted in 30 animal lovers rushing to a parking lot in Shanghai thus saving the lives of the felines.

A 16-year old girl, admitted to a hospital in Kolkata, was declared dead at the operation theatre following an appendix operation. However, the girl's family alleged that she was "raped and murdered" by hospital employees and went on a rampage thus ransacking the hospital premises.

The wettest place on the Earth, Cherrapunji, which is located in the East Khasi Hill district of Meghalaya, has changed it's name to Sohra, the name by which it is referred to by local tribal population. Cherrapunji, was the name given to the region by the British.
